Elon Musk has initiated an unprecedented campaign within the federal government, exerting sweeping control over agencies in ways that have stunned former top White House officials. His efforts, carried out through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have sparked intense controversy, legal challenges, and scrutiny over his authority.
Despite its name, DOGE is part of the White House and not a formal Cabinet agency. In recent days, DOGE has gained access to the Treasury Department’s payment systems, responsible for processing trillions of dollars annually.
Reports indicate DOGE is also exploring drastic cuts to the Department of Education, including the possibility of shutting it down entirely. Additionally, it has begun restructuring other agencies, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Small Business Administration.
During a live audio chat on his X platform on Sunday, Musk defended DOGE’s actions:
“Although it has a humorous name, DOGE will have a very serious and significant impact on government waste, fraud, and abuse, which is really astonishing in its scale and scope.”
He framed DOGE’s mission in ideological terms, criticizing the ‘tyranny of bureaucracy’ and calling for the ‘wholesale removal of regulations.’ His history of defying federal regulators raises concerns about conflicts of interest.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Musk’s expanding role, calling it a “hostile takeover of the federal government.” Meanwhile, Musk continues to defend DOGE on X, suggesting Treasury payments may be violating the law and labeling USAID “a criminal organization”—without providing evidence.
To clarify Musk’s role, the White House confirmed that he is serving as a “special government employee”—a temporary designation allowing up to 130 days of service per year.
President Donald Trump emphasized that Musk requires White House approval for major actions:
“Where we think there’s a conflict or a problem, we won’t let him go near it.”
However, ethics experts warn that Musk’s multiple business interests—including SpaceX and Tesla—could create conflicts of interest that violate federal law.
Concerns have also arisen about DOGE staff accessing classified information. Reports indicate that DOGE sought access to a secure compartmented information facility (SCIF) at USAID, which contains highly classified materials.
Former foreign service officer Eric Rubin expressed alarm:
“There are zero exceptions to SCIF access rules. The possibility of unauthorized personnel handling classified material is deeply concerning.”
The Alliance for Retired Americans and two federal employee unions have filed a lawsuit seeking to block DOGE’s access to Treasury’s payment systems, citing privacy concerns over taxpayer data.
“We filed a lawsuit to say, ‘hands off,’” said former White House ethics lawyer Norm Eisen. “This is wrong. It’s illegal.”
The extent of Musk’s influence remains uncertain, with legal battles mounting and federal agencies grappling with his aggressive push for restructuring. As DOGE continues its operations, critics and supporters alike are closely watching the unfolding impact on the U.S. government.
