Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is set to answer pressing questions from Black journalists during a forum in Philadelphia on Tuesday. The event, organized by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), follows Harris' absence from the organization’s annual convention in Chicago this summer due to a scheduling conflict.
Harris’ Republican rival, Donald Trump, attended the NABJ convention in July, sparking controversy with comments that questioned Harris’ racial identity and his contentious response to a moderator's line of questioning. Harris, however, had previously expressed her willingness to participate in a separate forum hosted by the group, which is now coming to fruition.
The forum will feature three journalists from TheGrio, Politico, and WHYY-FM, a public radio station in Philadelphia. This event mirrors Trump's appearance, where he faced a panel of Black journalists at the July convention.
A Critical Moment for the Black Vote
Harris and Trump are both keen to win over Black voters, a key demographic that could be decisive in the tightly contested 2024 presidential election, particularly in swing states like Pennsylvania. Pollsters consider Pennsylvania a must-win state in the Electoral College, and the outcome there could be pivotal in determining the next president.
Black voters have traditionally supported Democratic candidates in large numbers. In the 2020 election, 92% of Black voters backed Joe Biden over Trump, according to data from the Pew Research Center. However, Harris has faced scrutiny from some voters for declining to offer detailed policy proposals on issues critical to the Black community, including education, the economy, and criminal justice reform.
Harris' Opportunity to Address Key Concerns
As the first Black woman on a major party's presidential ticket, Harris is expected to address concerns important to Black voters during the Philadelphia forum. With the 2024 election on the horizon, both candidates are vying to strengthen their appeal to this crucial voting bloc, and Harris’ performance in the upcoming forum may influence the direction of her campaign.
This forum represents an opportunity for Harris to lay out her vision and clarify her stance on the key issues that could sway Black voters, as both parties intensify their outreach ahead of the November election.
