Martha Stewart has officially entered the political fray for the 2024 election, making a rare public endorsement. During the 2024 Retail Influencer CEO Forum on Tuesday, Stewart revealed that she would be voting for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election.

In a conversation with Joanna Coles, Chief Creative and Content Officer for The Daily Beast, Stewart emphasized her support for Harris, pronouncing her name with precision. Stewart explained that she wants a president "who doesn’t hate New York" and "doesn’t hate democracy," aligning herself with Harris’s platform.

A History of Tension with Trump

Stewart’s endorsement is notable not just for its rarity, but also because of her longstanding feud with Donald Trump. The 83-year-old lifestyle mogul and Trump clashed in 2006, when both were airing versions of The Apprentice. Stewart blamed Trump for her show’s poor ratings, alleging that he had agreed to leave the spotlight, allowing her to "fire" him and take over as the sole host. Trump denied these claims, accusing Stewart of lying about the arrangement and publicly stating that she should "take responsibility for her failure."

Their animosity continued to simmer, and in 2016, Stewart backed Hillary Clinton over Trump, stating that Trump was "totally unprepared" to lead the country.

Stewart’s Political Silence Until Now

Despite her criticism of Trump in 2016, Stewart has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since his victory. While she briefly congratulated him after his election, expressing hope for having an "entrepreneur in the White House," she remained silent during the 2020 election when asked about endorsing Biden or Trump.

In a 2020 interview with The New York Times, Stewart acknowledged the complexity of publicly supporting a candidate, noting that endorsing one side could alienate half her audience. “It’s difficult,” she said. “That’s my answer to that.”

A Quiet but Definitive Endorsement

Now, as the 2024 election approaches, Stewart has made it clear that her support lies with Kamala Harris. However, she has also expressed hesitation about getting too involved in the political conversation, acknowledging that discussing politics could risk alienating her fans and drawing scrutiny from corporate partners. "I’m not allowed to talk [about politics],” Stewart remarked, highlighting the challenges that come with being a public figure with a diverse audience.

As a convicted felon, Stewart was unable to vote during her five-month prison sentence in 2004 but regained her voting rights after her release in 2005. Today, as a New York resident, she remains free to cast her vote, and in this election, she’s placing her confidence in Kamala Harris to lead the country forward.
