In her response to President Trump's address to Congress, Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan voiced concerns about the lack of a credible plan to address rising prices for groceries and homes. She emphasized the importance of unity despite differing political views.
"My dad was a lifelong Republican, my mom a lifelong Democrat. But it was never a big deal because we had shared values that were bigger than any one party," Slotkin expressed.
Speaking from Wyandotte, Michigan, Slotkin highlighted key issues impacting daily life, specifically increasing costs of essential goods. She emphasized that these concerns were critical in her competitive Senate race, where she still managed to win, even as Trump carried the state.
Slotkin pointed out:
"Americans made it clear that prices are too high, and that the government needs to be more responsive to their needs. America wants change, but there's a responsible way to make change and a reckless way, and we can make that change without forgetting who we are as a country and as a democracy."
She criticized Trump's tariffs on allies like Canada, stating:
"Grocery and home prices are going up, not down. And he hasn't laid out a credible plan to deal with either of those."
Slotkin further warned about the possible consequences of Trump's policies, stating that they could lead to a recession and might target retirement benefits such as Social Security and Medicare:
"In order to pay for his plan, he could very well come after your retirement."
Slotkin also raised concerns about the influence of Elon Musk in government, particularly regarding data privacy and the mass firings of federal workers. She questioned the appropriateness of Musk analyzing sensitive information of American citizens:
"Is there anyone in America who is comfortable with him and his gang of 20-year-olds poking through your tax returns, your health information, and your bank accounts?"
Reflecting on a recent contentious interaction between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, she stated:
"Former President Ronald Reagan must be rolling in his grave after that near-screaming match."
In closing, Slotkin acknowledged the current state of uncertainty in the country but reminded citizens that change is possible through engaged leadership:
"Hold your elected officials, including me, accountable. Go to town halls and demand they take action. That's as American as apple pie."
