Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) Ok With States Outlawing Interracial Marriage

GOP Sen. Mike Braun Says Interracial Marriage Should Be Left To The States

The Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage nationwide in 1967, in the landmark case Loving v. Virginia. Mike Braun, Senator from Indiana, believes that was a mistake. Sen. Braun when asked if he felt states should be able to outlaw interracial marriage, responded by saying:

"Yes, I think that’s something ― if you’re not wanting the Supreme Court to weigh in on issues like that, you’re not going to be able to have your cake and eat it too. I think that’s hypocritical."

Braun later walked back his comments, claiming he misunderstood the question. He was not able to clarify what specifically he misunderstood, but his answer raised eyebrows across the political spectrum. The Indiana Democratic Party released a statement condemning Braun’s statements, calling his rhetoric “an endorsement of the same dangerous white nationalist views that led to the insurrection against the United States of America on Jan. 6, 2021.”
