On Saturday morning, Senator Roger Marshall held a town hall meeting at the Logan County Hospital in Oakley, Kansas. The event began at 9 a.m. and lasted for about 40 minutes, during which the audience displayed a mix of support and dissent.
The room was filled to capacity with attendees, some standing due to limited seating. Many wore shirts or carried signs that criticized Senator Marshall along with the Trump administration. A noticeable group also donned military-themed apparel. Early in the meeting, Marshall acknowledged the crowd's presence.
“A lot of folks have traveled a long way to be here. This is really Oakley’s town hall. I’m going to try to focus on their questions,” said Marshall.
The senator received varied responses from the audience, with some expressing gratitude while others insisted he should represent the entire state. As tensions escalated, he warned the attendees:
“If you all keep cutting me off, if you’re rude... I’m going to leave.”
Marshall addressed a recent event in the Oval Office between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodyr Zelenskyy, expressing his empathy for the Ukrainian people but criticizing financial support for Ukraine, stating it felt like a “bottomless pit.” He emphasized his goal of achieving peace to avoid a larger conflict.
During the town hall, Marshall entertained questions from the crowd, some of which provoked further interruptions and mixed reactions of cheers and boos. He defended Trump's support of Kansas farmers and discussed changes to government programs, including cuts to USAID.
After around 30 minutes of increasing criticism, Marshall remarked:
“Do you want to have your own town hall?”
One local, Chuck Nunn, thanked Marshall for attending, praising his efforts to cut government waste but warning of the potential impact on veterans:
“What you’re doing right now...is a damn shame.”
Marshall acknowledged the concerns but noted he had limited time due to other commitments. As he concluded, he thanked the audience and left the room amid yelling and booing. Some attendees labeled him a coward as he exited.
Following the event, we reached out for a statement from Senator Marshall’s press team, receiving a response that attributed criticism to “Democrat operatives” who allegedly disrupted the town hall. The statement emphasized Marshall’s commitment to answering questions and the support he believes he has from "real Kansans." However, our efforts for clarification remained unanswered aside from a minor update to the original statement.
