The Eagles Need To Take The Money And Run

Reality Check: Carson Wentz is not that good; the Eagles are morons for holding out for more

The NFL is the ultimate what have you done for me lately league. As the Eagles should know since they just fired a coach who won them a Superbowl just a few years ago. As a result of that constant pressure, teams often reach to try to "win now" as opposed to worrying about the long term plans for the franchise. This "must win" "must win" "must win" desperation have led to teams like the Bears, Colts, and others to be willing to trade away the farm for the Eagles backup QB.

Yes, he's a first round pick. Yes, a few years ago he was an MVP candidate. But at the end of the day, his play in recent years has earned him a spot as a back up QB. Yet instead of taking whatever bounty built on a foundation of desperation teams are offering the Eagles. The Eagles brain-trust risks snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The fact is Carson Wentz is not worth anywhere near what is being offered.

Teams need to remember, you get 0 yards, 0 TDs, 0 completions from a QB that does not play. Wentz has managed to play 16 games only twice in his five year career. This is due to injury and also bad play. Why trade away multiple picks for a QB who will not play?

In 2017, the top 10 QBs (in attempts) included Phillip Rivers (retired), Eli Manning (retired), Matt Stafford (traded), Ben Roethlisberger (old), Joe Flacco (should be retired), Kirk Cousins (for a team in Washington that was still sporting a racist name), Drew Brees (retired), and Matt Ryan (who should also be planning his retirement) - along with Brady and Wilson. But basically 2017 was, in NFL years - a life time away. Most of the top QBs of the time are out of the league, or should be. Yet that was probably the last time you could call Wentz and ascending QB. His season was (surprise surprise) cut short by injury, be in his sophomore campaign he showed promise, a 101+ QB rating, 250+ yards per game, 33 TDs to 7 Interceptions. Carson Wentz was the future; sadly, that season was cut short by injury - and Nick Foles came on to win a Superbowl with the same roster.

Still, Wentz in 2017/2018 was a rising star and 2018 he did rise. Increasing his yards per game, QB rating, Wentz looked the part of real star NFL QB, at least for the (surprise, suprise) 11 games he played due to again being injured. And since that year Wentz has looked anything but a franchise QB. After posting a QB Rating of 102 in 2018, that number fell to 93.1 in 2019 and 72.8 in 2020. While 2018 was his first full season he was able to stay healthy for since his rookie year, it was also his worst TD percentage since his rookie year (and 2020 was even worse than 2019), his worst completion percentage since his rookie year (2020 was worse), and his worst yards per attempt since his rookie year (2020 was worst). In short, he's a QB on the decline.

Maybe a change in scenery will pop him back to what he was a lifetime ago, but no team should be willing to trade their entire future for a chance to find out. Carson Wentz is NOT, currently, an elite QB, in fact he's statistically one of the worst available starting QBs. If the Eagles are smart they will take whatever teams are throwing at them, because for fans of the Bears, Colts and others - the hope is that their front offices will wake up before making the huge mistake of trading for Wentz.
