President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin are expected to hold a conversation this week. This communication comes as the United States aims to mediate a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Special envoy Steve Witkoff shared this information, indicating anticipation for a productive dialogue.
Witkoff recently met with Putin to discuss the situation in Ukraine. He expressed optimism about reaching an agreement soon:
"The president uses the timeframe weeks and I don’t disagree with him. I am really hopeful that we are going to see some real progress here."
While appearing on CBS' “Face the Nation,” Witkoff reiterated the potential for a constructive call between the two leaders:
"I expect the call this week to be very positive and constructive."
Trump's previous communication with Putin followed a mission to secure the release of Marc Fogel, an American teacher wrongfully detained in Russia.
Although Witkoff did not confirm whether the leaders would discuss implementing a 30-day ceasefire proposal, he mentioned that Ukraine has agreed to it, and Putin expressed agreement in principle, pending further details:
"It’s a very positive sign that the two of them will be talking at some point. I think that’s showing that there’s positive momentum.”
In response to comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding Russia’s sincerity in seeking peace, Witkoff defended the dialogue approach. He stated:
“It’s unfortunate when people make those sort of assessments when they don’t have necessarily firsthand knowledge.”
Reflecting on his meeting with Putin, he commented on the constructive nature of their discussions.
