President Donald Trump announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to the White House on Friday to sign a crucial minerals deal. This agreement is expected to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Ukraine.
Trump described the deal as "a very big agreement," emphasizing that it would enable the U.S. to access Ukraine's rare earth minerals, which are important for industries like aerospace, defense, and nuclear.
He framed the deal as an opportunity for Ukraine to repay the U.S. for support given during the ongoing war with Russia, stating, "We’re going to get the money back and a lot of money in the future."
During a news conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy mentioned that while a framework for the economic deal has been established, it currently lacks vital U.S. security guarantees. He expressed that understanding the U.S. stance on military support is essential for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said, "This agreement may be part of future security guarantees, but I want to understand the broader vision. What awaits Ukraine?”
Trump, however, was cautious about committing to any security guarantees, suggesting that European nations should take the lead on that front. He added, "U.S. presence in Ukraine through mineral extraction would offer automatic security for our operations."
Trump indicated that NATO membership for Ukraine is unlikely, stating, "You can forget about it. I think that’s probably the reason the whole thing started." His remarks come in the context of ongoing talks about peace in Ukraine and negotiation strategies with Russia.
The planned economic agreement will specify terms for a fund aimed at rebuilding Ukraine. It is still subject to approval by the Ukrainian parliament.
Zelenskyy expressed the urgency of negotiating military aid details with Trump, including potential weapon purchases and the use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine's needs.
As discussions continue, Trump's administration has signaled that the acceptance of the investment agreement is crucial for the upcoming meeting.
The meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy could significantly impact the future relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine, particularly concerning security guarantees and economic cooperation.
