Press Conference Overview

During a press conference on Thursday, President Trump interrupted a discussion with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding Trump's desire for Canada to become the "51st state." Starmer asserted that there are no major disagreements between the two leaders on important issues.

Clarification from the White House

Following the conference, the White House addressed interpretations suggesting Trump cut Starmer off, stating on X, “Fake News. President Trump was clearly talking to the reporter trying to goad the leaders into division.”

Starmer's Comments

A reporter asked Starmer whether he had discussed Trump's remarks about annexing Canada and whether King Charles had expressed any concerns. Starmer replied:

“Look, we had a really good discussion, a productive discussion. Our teams are happy to be working together on economic and security issues. You mention Canada; I think you’re trying to find a divide between us that doesn’t exist. We’re the closest of nations, and we had very good discussions today.”

Starmer's attempt to continue speaking on the matter was cut short by Trump, who said, “That’s enough, thank you,” before moving on to another question.

Relationship Between the U.S. and Canada

Canada, which is part of the Commonwealth of Nations established in 1931, has consistently rejected Trump's notions of becoming a U.S. state. Earlier this month, Trump expressed affection for the Canadian people and remarked that if Canada joined the U.S., it would be “the greatest thing they could ever do.”

Recent Trade Developments

On a related note, earlier this month, Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed on a 30-day pause in implementing 25% tariffs, which are now set to go into effect next week.
